In 1955 he received an honorary LL.D. from the University of New Brunswick. In 1967 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. He is a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). He was a knight Grand Cross of the Canadian priory of the Venerable Order of Saint John.
